According to Smh.com.au, twenty years after he died, it's almost impossible to believe QUEEN's Freddie Mercury - arguably the greatest rock frontman ever, blessed with an almost operatic vocal range and a mesmerising stage presence - began as a second-rate guitarist.

''He wanted to be a guitarist like his hero, JIMI HENDRIX,'' says his biographer Lesley-Ann Jones, a former Fleet Street rock correspondent who toured with Queen in the group's heyday.

''But he realised he'd never have the same natural ability as Hendrix. Freddie was a piano player. That was the instrument he composed on.''
