CRADLE OF FILTH Bassist Dave Pybus Tackles The NFL - "Somewhat Contrary To Most Other US Foreign Policy, I Personally See American Football As One Of Their Better Ideas"
November 6, 2011, 13 years ago
CRADLE OF FILTH bassist Dave Pybus is featured in a new interview with Mark Morton at the Heavy Metal Examiner. An excerpt is available below:
Q: How did you, a British fellow, come to adore American football?
Pybus: "Well, controversially and somewhat contrary to most other U.S. foreign policy (which usually involves bombing the crap out of faraway countries in order to secure their oil), I personally see American Football as one of their better ideas. In the early 1980's, a new TV channel over here decided to have the maverick idea of showing more unusual sports from all over the globe. That included NFL, amongst the likes of Sumo wrestling (Japan) and Kabaddi (India), to name a few. I'd started to form my own tastes in music at an early age and this was just an extension of being an awkward child with different ideas to the 'herd'. I hated rugby and my interest in soccer didn't really extend beyond collector cards with my schoolyard chums. Luckily, and quite crucially, I was also not exposed to the jock mentality while watching this game on TV, and so it struck some kind of chord with me. Oh, and I'm into stats."
Q: Do you get strange looks or comments from your UK compatriots for enjoying it?
Pybus: "I get strange looks regardless of liking this sport, and accepting that I don't really follow fashion or care much of what people think of me without ever speaking to me, any comments about anything I'm into are taken with a pinch of salt. The usual 'He's got a nice bottom' from my mom and 'They must be gay for wearing helmets' from any other ignoramus who's never been tackled by an NFL linebacker are met with the standard marking-down they deserve. This game isn't about looks or ones sexual preferences. It's about winning. Period. If you don't understand that concept, well, no wonder the basic rules are eluding."

A follow-on from last year’s triumphant Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa album, Evermore Darkly will arrive as a CD/DVD package including new tracks and rarities, with a lengthy on-the-road documentary and ten songs filmed live at this year's Graspop metal meet, as well as the video for 'Lilith Immaculate'.
The CD features brand new musical beast ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars’, plus a special remix of ‘Forgive Me Father’, courtesy of Rob C from ANTHRAX, an extended rendition of ‘Lilith Immaculate', as well as tempered demo versions of three ‘Darkly, Darkly…’ songs. The mini-album closes with a special taster from Cradle Of Filth’s impending orchestral project, in the form of a haunting, classic reworking of fan-favourite, ‘Summer Dying Fast’.
The ‘Evermore Darkly’ DVD contains footage from Summer 2011, when Cradle Of Filth embarked on a rapid spat of tours, accompanied by two eager filmmakers. The resulting documentary, 'You Can't Polish A Turd, But You Can Roll It In Glitter', combined with performance and interview footage culminates in a forty five minute film of the not so glamorous reality of life in a touring band at work and play, as they trawl their way across Europe over eight performances. The DVD includes an interview with ghoul-guide Dani Filth, interspersed and peppered with live footage and backstage shenanigans, culminating in the entire hour long set from this year's highly anticipated Graspop festival appearance.
Dani states that it is 'a much-loved musical stop-gap between albums, a pleasure treasure trove of wild and wicked wonders primed especially for fans. Something for them to sink their teeth into this Autumn as the Cradle invasion fleet is primed for future contagion….'
A mini-site has been launched in anticipation of the release, and contains audio samples from the new mini-album, the band’s latest music video for 'Lilith Immaculate', album info, downloads and more. Check it out at this location.
A new video clip from the DVD portion of the release is now availble. Check out two clips below:
