Canadian-born DREAM THEATER singer James LaBrie spoke with Nicole Million from Simcoe.com about being nominated for a Grammy - the song 'On the Backs of Angels' is up against works by the MASTODON, MEGADETH, FOO FIGHTERS and SUM 41 for best hard rock/metal performance. The Grammy ceremony goes February 12 in Los Angeles.

“It’s the feather in our cap to be in that category with those nominees,” said LaBrie, who learned of the nomination from bandmate John Petrucci while in San Diego.

“I was really taken aback. I just never thought that it was in the cards for us because our music tends to be left wing – it’s not your typical music, (but) it’s an amazing feeling and we’re hoping for the best possible result and that is to win it.”

LaBrie, who was born, raised and still lives in Midland, said he intends to head to L.A. with his wife and two children to attend the ceremony with his band.

Although the icing on the cake would be to win the Grammy, LaBrie said simply being nominated will help widen Dream Theater’s audience.

“It will be an educational process for a lot of people who are going to ask, ‘Who are these guys?’” he said. “We’ve sold 12 million albums, but there are still a lot of people who don’t know we exist because we’re not the typical band that’s on radio, MTV or MuchMusic.”
