January 17, 2012, 12 years ago
To commemorate the fine 30th Anniversary of metal’s most venerable and storied label, Metal Blade Records, the writers of BraveWords.com have gotten their metalheads together and come up with a list of the Top 30 coolest, most legendary, rockingest, most influential, most deserving of fame and notoriety, releases founder/CEO Brian Slagel and crew have issued since forging the fire way back in mom’s garage in 1982. As has become tradition ‘round here, we are presenting them – through January and February – in reverse order, leading eventually to the penultimate slab of iron ever to carry an esteemed Metal Blade catalogue number.

KING’S X prove the talk of claiming hundreds of unreleased songs from over the years to be more than just blather, by constructing an album of only oldies, performed and recorded in the here and now. What is demonstrated is the band’s time-honoured knack for heavy riffing, heavenly vocal harmonies, and poignant lyrics, the latter, unsurprisingly from a place of touching naiveté. The title track is the real corker here, while ‘Danger Zone’ offers amusing youthful pop, and ‘Working Man’ an anthemic power chorded chorus next to a restrained verse. My personal choice to make this list would have been Tapehead, a proud Metal Blade release which I actually prefer to any of the Atlantic albums, actually. Nonetheless, it’s very cool seeing how long King’s X were part of the stable, due mainly to Brian’s appreciation of this national treasure of a trio.
