According to The Associated Press, the Los Angeles Unified School District's board on Tuesday postponed a decision to slash more than $500 million from next school year's budget, including the elimination of adult education, preschools and elementary arts.
The vote followed a demonstration outside the board meeting and a lengthy parade of people pleading with the board to keep the programs, including Grammy Award-winning drummer Matt Sorum, of the rock group VELVET REVOLVER and formerly of GUNS N' ROSES and THE CULT.
Sorum said music saved him in school as he was not good at academics.
"Without music, without arts, some of these kids are going to go the other way," he said. "It's a travesty to shut down arts in Los Angeles."Sorum said he'd like to meet with Superintendent John Deasy to discuss ways to get the local entertainment community involved in saving public school arts programs.
