THE CULT - Ian Astbury Talks About Collaborating With BOB ROCK, CHRIS GOSS On New Album

THE CULT will release their new album, Choice Of Weapon, on May 22nd via the band's new label, Cooking Vinyl. The album was produced by Bob Rock (METALLICA). It was written by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, recorded in New York City, Los Angeles, the California high desert, and the band's Witch Mountain studio between July and December 2011. The new release features founding members Astbury on vocals and Duffy on guitars, with drummer John Tempesta and bassist Chris Wyse.
ARTISTdirect spoke with Ian Astbury recently about the album and if there's a new vitality in the band.
"It's strange. When you're a kid, you're very earnest. You come out of what's there. You're very raw. You plug into what's going on. As you develop as an artist, you start trying to pull it apart, figure out how it works, and make it work to your advantage. That's when you start going long. You start questioning what you're doing and trying to make it better. You go through a period of that, and then you go past that. Then, you find a place where you're plugged into who you are. You've got really good self-knowledge. You know your strengths and you know your weakness. That's when you can really go to work. There's a real core confidence, and you plug into what you are. The Cult is a collaboration. Chris Goss had a huge influence on us consolidating our sound. Bob Rock had a huge influence on us making this record. It's the first time we've actually worked with two producers on one record apart from the Electric album. That was two separate recordings of a body of work. This is actually the same body of work worked on by two incredible producers. I think there are a lot of elements that made it possible. There are a lot of life experiences. I left Los Angeles seven years ago. I just had to get away from the city, go, rediscover, and reinvent myself.
