HALFORD guitarist METAL MIKE CHLASCIAK has issued the following recap of his first ever destination metal camp with School Of Rock:

"Horns up. I just wanted to send in a quick up-date to let you know that we all had a blast at the metal camp in the Catskill Mountains, up-state New York.

We had plenty of young players aged 10-19 spending days learning about music, rehearsing and performing their favorite songs. It has been nothing but an energizing experience to see so many eager young metal heads from across 7 states and as far as Texas.

Any given moment you could spot plenty of METALLICA, CARCASS and DEATH T-shirts, denim vests and flying Vs. Its quiet an experience to see guitars being carried in their coffin cases and to hear heated talks about the kids' favorite bands, concerts and musicians. We have all rehearsed for days, had workshops, lit up huge beach front bonfire and had an opportunity to enjoy zip line and lets not forget ferociously fast go carts to boot.

We had many, very dedicated metal lovers here. Just one example is a young drummer named Evelyn from MD who has worked for months in order to save enough money to get herself here and enjoy the camp.

I must say that the young metallers definitely love their MESHUGGAH and SLIPKNOT, but at the same time there is deep appreciation for the momumental classic bands such as JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN or MEGADETH.

We had a special visit from Jeff from Project Independent Metal Showcase who talked to the kids about various aspects about the music business. We were extremely happy to have Jason McMaster (WATCHTOWER, DANGEROUS TOYS, BROKEN TEETH) as one of our partners in crime who took much care in showing techniques and leading rehearsals with one of the metal groups. The remaining staff compromised of top School Of Rock hard rock/metal teachers worked endlessly with the kids.

The final performance took place on Saturday, August 25th and featured various songs including: 'I Don't Know' by OZZY OSBOURNE, 'War Ensemble' by SLAYER, 'Electric Funeral' by BLACK SABBATH, 'Another Thing Comin'' by Judsas Priest, 'Psycho Holiday' by PANTERA, 'Walk With Me In Hell' by LAMB OF GOD, 'Locked And Loaded' by Halford and 'American Metalhead' by PAINMUSEUM. It was a blast jamming several songs with the young metal heads in front of the crowd consisting of their parents, family members and friends!

Most importantly, I could see that although heavy metal brought everyone here together – the camp was something that was needed by the kids. You could see their faces and spirits light up as they spent time with peers who shared the same passions as they did.

Overall, I think this was a fantastic experience full of growth for everyone. I would also like to thank School Of Rock for working so hard on developing and bringing life to this idea. Until next time – keep the horns up high."
