An owner of The Station nightclub serving time in prison for a fire that killed 100 people has been disciplined for violating corrections department policy, officials said Tuesday (December 5th). Michael Derderian was sentenced in September to four years in minimum security at the state prison in Cranston after pleading no contest to involuntary manslaughter charges.

He was sanctioned last week for having an unauthorized visit from a "personal acquaintance" at the Warwick auto body shop where he had been serving his work-release assignment, said corrections department director A.T. Wall.

Wall declined to say who visited Derderian, but said it was not a family member. He said Derderian then lied about "several pieces of information" when questioned about the visit by corrections department investigators.

"When inmates are in minimum security and go out to job sites, there are certain rules and regulations that they must follow," Wall said. "We make sure that they are aware of those regulations."

Wall also said Derderian admitted receiving food from a family member while at the work-release site, in violation of corrections department policy. Inmates are typically not allowed personal visits while at their work-release sites, said acting department spokesman Kenneth Findlay. Derderian was taken off the job site last month because of security concerns.

His lawyer, Kathleen Hagerty, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. The alleged violations were the subject of a December 1 disciplinary hearing, and a hearing officer determined that Derderian was guilty of the violations. Derderian has appealed the findings. If the sanctions are upheld, Derderian could face temporary loss of privileges in his minimum-security facility, such as loss of telephone calls and visits and restriction to one room. He could also be relocated for 15 days to a medium-security facility at the prison complex. The sanctions were first reported by WPRI-TV.

Derderian and his brother, Jeffrey, each pleaded no contest in September to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the February 20, 2003, fire at their West Warwick nightclub. The fire began when pyrotechnics used by the rock band GREAT WHITE set fire to flammable foam used as soundproofing around the stage. Jeffrey Derderian was sentenced to probation and 500 hours of community service, and former Great White tour manager Daniel Biechele was earlier given a four-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to setting off the pyrotechnics.
