Pirates Den Fire - Help A Metal-Head For The Holidays?
December 13, 2006, 17 years ago
As previously reported, the Pirate's Den, virtually the only original metal club in the Philly/NJ/NYC area, burned down early today (December 13th). In the last couple of years, it has played host to touring nationals like BEYOND FEAR, CHRIS CAFFERY. METAL CHURCH, DIRTY RIG and GEORGE LYNCH, as well as regional, yet internationally known acts like DEADLY BLESSING and SEVEN WITCHES. It was also the weekly hangout for metal fans, who could see 4-6 fledgling bands every Friday and Saturday. Owner Brian Cohen, who lived in one of the upstairs apartments (and was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation) was beset by a triple pre-Christmas whammy: losing his livelihood, home and the club. Compounding matters is the fact Cohen lost his leg, years before, in an accident, so the Pirate' s Den was a safe place for him to work.
An online fund has been set up to help Cohen, who lost everything. Bands and area fans, as well as possibly some outside visitors, are working on benefits in his honor, but right now there's a serious need for immediate cash. At this charitable time of year, if we metalheads can forego one less pack of cigarettes, or have one less beer the next time you go out and instead, donate those
few dollars to a true fan/supporter of the metallic cause, it would be greatly appreciated.
