SLAYER Guitarist Kerry King - "When I Look At METALLICA, I'm Like, 'Am I Supposed To Believe You're The Guys Who Did Master Of Puppets'"

SLAYER guitarist Kerry King spoke to Kevin W. Smith from the Azstarnet.com recently about a number of topics including their devoted following. An excerpt follows:
"It surprises me that we have such a following and we do so well touring, and you really can't find us anywhere other than your own iPod or CD player," King said. "I think that makes the fans feel like it's theirs more."The band are set to perform on national network television for the first time ever Friday on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Strange for a band that's been releasing material and touring for more than 20 years, putting out its first album, Show No Mercy, in 1983 — though not so odd for a truly heavy-metal band.
King said that when heavy-metal bands try to change up their style to cross over into mainstream, like in the famous instance of METALLICA chopping hair off and seemingly writing for the radio, the results are less than stellar and ultimately confusing.
"When I look at Metallica, I'm like, 'Am I supposed to believe you're the guys who did "Master of Puppets," or am I supposed to believe you're the guys who did "Load," or am I supposed to believe you guys are the ones who are trying to be heavy again but forgot how to do it?' " he said.
Slayer has done just fine sticking to its formula and notching six gold records. "Even if we tried to be popular . . . we'd probably (expletive) it all up," King said.
