GREAT WHITE - Station Fire Update: Bartender Recalls First Moments Of Fatal Club Fire

A bartender at a nightclub where a 2003 fire killed 100 people said she saw flames snake up the walls after a rock band (GREAT WHITE) ignited pyrotechnics, thought "somebody's going to put that out, right?"

Julie Mellini, who worked at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, said she grabbed her tip jar and register drawer and headed out, according to grand jury testimony released Thursday. She then handed them to club co-owner Jeffrey Derderian, who was "right by the front door helping people."

"He grabbed the drawer and said for me to help people, and he went away for a minute," Mellini told a statewide grand jury that investigated the Feb. 20, 2003 fire at the club.
