One of the cradles of Sheffield's industrial heritage has been given protected status by city chiefs. The Stag Works, on John Street, Highfield, was declared part of a conservation area this week to preserve it from unsympathetic development. The former cutlery building is currently used for a number of creative industries and contains rehearsal rooms used by many city bands - including DEF LEPPARD.

Councillors on the City Centre Planning and Highways Area Board gave the John Street area the same protected status as the stone Victorian villas of Nether Edge.

The area contains many significant buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries when Sheffield’s metal industry was developing.

Two buildings in particular, the Stag Works and the Portland Works, are described as “the most significant and exemplary metal trades buildings in the city”.

A lottery bid to renovate the Stag Works has been submitted and is not affected by the protected status.

English Heritage undertook a 10-year study of more than 150 metal trades sites in the city, mostly in the centre, and are hoping to “list” many of the buildings to ensure they are not lost or developed insensitively.

The John Street district, west of Bramall Lane has been hailed as “radically different” to other surrounding areas.
