MACHINE HEAD Frontman Robert Flynn On New Record - "Our Goal Was To Write The Master Of Puppets Of This Generation”

MACHINE HEAD frontman Robert Flynn spoke to BW&BK; recently about a number of topics including their new album, The Blackening, which is out now via Roadrunner Records. Here is an excerpt from the chat:
“Our goal with this record was, as lofty and maybe even arrogant as it was, our goal was to write the Master Of Puppets of this generation," says Flynn. When I say that, I don’t mean that we want to be the next Metallica or that we want to be as big as Metallica. Or even that we wanted to do a record that Metallica would do now, but a record that would make that kind of epic, grandiose power – a record that’s timeless. You put on Master Of Puppets today; it’s fucking better than 95% of the goddamn metal records that are released this year, last year or the year before that. That’s saying something. They had the long songs and unconventional song structures. I thought some of …And Justice For All was cool, but I didn’t really like the long songs. I thought they kind of droned on. I felt they nailed the long songs better on Master Of Puppets – songs like ‘Orion’ and ‘Disposable Heroes’. Justice had its moments, but some of it seemed kind of thrown together to me. In the year 2015, ask me then, but I don’t think so. I really feel like there’s so many molten riffs that go into each other. It’s fucking exciting. Even from a selfish standpoint of just totally my own personal enjoyment, it’s so fun playing these songs.
