AFTER FOREVER Guitarist SANDER GOMMANS - "I Hate It When A Song Doesn't Seem Right, And Sometimes I Cannot Let It Go"
June 11, 2007, 17 years ago
AFTER FOREVER guitarist Sander Gommans has offered the following inside look at the band's songwriting process:
"Most of the time, the verse is written first, or the chorus. It's often based on a more instrumentally challenging idea, that often ends up to become the beginning or the midpart. The midpart is most fun to write, because you can cross more boundaries, sometimes having in mind that vocals have to fit in there. After that, it takes a lot of time to make the puzzle complete, I have to have THE After Forever feeling, I have to feel that it fits, that it's complete. This can take ages, and even in the recording process it might be changed. I hate it when a song doesn't seem right and sometimes I cannot let it go, while that often is the best solution. Sometimes you have to put the song aside, listen to it a week later and then the solution comes immediately!
After Joost and I write the instrumental parts, we play them for Floor and give our ideas about the verse/chorus/midpart, then she'll write the lyrics and the vocal melodies, sometimes we already have a few lines in mind. After that, 'll take a look at the song again, and after that we work it out with the band.
This is a general description, obviously every song has its own story...sometimes a horror story..."
