The New York Post reports that moviegoers opted for pre-Halloween scares this Labor Day weekend. ROB ZOMBIE's prequel-remake of the 1978 John Carpenter classic opened at number one at the North American box office with a four-day total of $31 million. It cost $15 million to make.
The re-imagined Halloween now stands as the best Labor Day weekend opener ever, surpassing record holder Transporter 2, which debuted in 2005 with $20.1 million. Halloween's impressive numbers also helped to push the overall summer totals to over $4 billion.
"Halloween was far beyond anything we've seen on Labor Day," Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers told The Associated Press. "It was just a perfect ending to a perfect summer. Hopefully, we can do this every year."Dimension Films has signed a two-picture deal with Rob Zombie. Under the agreement, Zombie will write and produce both movies. Rob said it is a "natural step in the evolution of my film career." No further details have been released.
As a recording artist, Zombie has sold more than 15 million albums and directed dozens of music videos. His live album, Zombie Live, is scheduled for release October 23rd to coincide with his upcoming tour with OZZY OSBOURNE. Venue and ticket information has not yet been released.
