DEVIL'S SON-IN-LAW Film 'Seaworthy' Video
October 9, 2007, 17 years ago
Sludge/stoner metal act DEVIL'S SON-IN-LAW have announced that the band has finished shooting live segments for their upcoming 'Seaworthy' video with director Gary Smithson (HIGH ON FIRE, EAGLES OF DEATH METAL, EYES OF FIRE, GOATWHORE, EXODUS, TOMAHAWK). The video shoot took place on Sunday October 7 in Los Angeles, California and the final product is expected for an early 2008 release.
Commented vocalist Alex Pollak: "The location was in a dilapidated building in Korea Town. We had to wait for the Jehova Witnesses to finish their services before we could begin playing. We played for about 4 hours, and had lunch for an hour. Gary the director and his crew were all cool cats, most of them involved with the early eighties and nineties punk and metal scenes in the San Francisco Bay Area, so we talked a lot about music. Since we are doing a new recording for the video we had to play the music and not cue it from a cd. Our drummer Jack's hands began to bleed and now there's blood everywhere on his drumset. The producers took pictures and we're supposed to hit them up in a week to get some."
Filming of the video's storyline is set to take place over the next few weeks. The following is an excerpt from the video treatment by director Gary Smithson: "The video will have a theme about the sea and old ships. The storyline will be about a band of sea shanty, gypsies that are living in a small camp next to the beach. The people seem to have some kind of strange tie to the ocean, as if they were waiting for something to come back from the sea. The main character is a widow who lives in an old hotel by the sea. She has pictures of a man that appears to be her husband. Her room is decorated with candles as she keeps a watch on the ocean."
Devil's Son-In-Law recently released a limited-edition CD/EP through Canada's Moshpit Tragedy Records. The first press of this self-titled five-song EP is limited to 100 hand-numbered, screenprinted copies in a mini-vinyl sleeve as part of the label's DIY Series. The entire EP is also being offered for FREE as a high-quality download complete with cover art from www.moshpit-tragedy.com.
Beginning as an instrumental project between childhood friends from Detroit, Michigan, the band later relocated to Oakland, California before assuming the name (taken from the Rudy Ray Moore film Peetey Wheatstraw) Devil's Son-In-Law in 2005. Although heavily influenced by bands like SLEEP, NEUROSIS, EYEHATEGOD, and ASUNDER, their style is also heavily drawn from blues slide guitar and early psychedelic rock. Many of their early pieces were improvisational and experimental, but would be the essence of today's sound.
Devil's Son-In-Law is scheduled to perform alongside Portland, Oregon crust act HELLSHOCK on October 10 at Gilman Street Club in Berkeley, California.
