BW&BK Exclusive: DANKO JONES – The SOULFLY Effect
February 4, 2008, 16 years ago
BW&BK; recently caught up with Danko Jones to discuss his new album, Never Too Loud. The following is an excerpt from the interview, with Danko commenting on the demand by European summer rock and metal festivals to have the band on their respective bills, going so far on some occasions to announce them as confirmed before they actually are:
“I’m blown away by it,” Danko admits. “I totally appreciate it because for years we were knocking on doors, so when they’re quick to announce us in order to get people to come out I actually go‘…Really?’"On sharing the stage with some of metal's finest:
"It’s kind of intimidating when a wall of sound is what you have to follow. I remember we played Rock am Ring (in Germany) two years ago and the band before us was Soulfly. It was one of Dan’s (Cornelius/drums) first shows playing in front of 20,000 people or whatever it was. It was second stage, so it was around 20,000. Metallica played that night so there was something like 80,000 people at the festival. Dan is staring out into the crowd, Soulfly are on, and you know them - ‘Come on! Get up! Graaahhh!’ – and the crowd is moving, this massive ocean of people jumping up and down. I was with Dan and remember him turning to me and just going ‘Holy shit!’ (laughs). Dan was so psyched up that he played our whole show so fast I could barely keep up. That was all because he saw Soulfly on stage. It was pretty hilarious.”
