BW&BK Exclusive: WOODS OF YPRES - Gearing Up For Fourth Album; Re-Releases, Vinyl Singles And EP Featuring Cover Tunes In Planning
March 11, 2008, 16 years ago
BW&BK; recently hooked up with WOODS OF YPRES frontman/founder David Gold to discuss the band's new album, Woods III: Deepest Roots And Darkest Blues. The following is yet another unpublished excerpt from the interview, with Gold discussing the band's plans for the future.
"I don’t think anything I will ever do in my life will be as hard as those three years while we wrote and recorded Woods III," Gold admits. "I’ve already had my midlife crisis, survived personal hells and found a way to release three Woods albums and complete the Against The Seasons trilogy. Everything in the future will be easier than what it was. Also, I look at the first three albums as ‘just practice’ for the real thing. After five years I have a pretty good idea of what works and what doesn’t, and we have a better idea of who Woods Of Ypres really is and who we are not. Woods IV will be more like Woods II (Pursuit Of The Sun & Allure Of The Earth). We buried the old band with 'The Dream Is Dead' on the new album. Now we have new dreams to pursue. The next album will be the dawn of rebirth and new beginnings. The working title is as simple as Woods IV – Spring: The Green Album. Expect this to be the first album in a tetralogy of four albums, each based on a season, in chronological order. I have cut my hair, shaved my beard and already gone through some brutal and life changing adjustments and developments. I am intending to sell all my old guitars and amp from the Against The Seasons era 2002-2007, as well as any remaining merch and memorabilia from that time and start fresh; see my eBay page in fall 2008, everything must go! I’m still shopping around for the perfect green guitar for the next era.
The Green Album has already quickly come together in my mind faster than I could archive the ideas on my laptop. You can expect some bright, prog-black metal influences a la Borknagar in major chords mixed with mature acoustic singer/songwriter lyrical styles, pop-catchiness, better overall production and of course a few surprises. We’re not out to be heavier than Behemoth or Nile, or more black metal than Darkthrone, we’re just going to get better at what we do best and become a better band that is Woods Of Ypres. Keep listening because the future looks great!
The other things between now and Woods IV could also prove to be very interesting. We intend to finally re-release our second album, remixed and remastered with new art by summer 2008, Woods III on double gatefold vinyl in fall of 2008, some 7” vinyl singles, an EP of re-worked Woods Of Ypres songs and covers (featuring a re-recorded version of 'A Meeting Place And Time', which will include Jessica (Rose) on keys this time, our Katatonia ‘Deadhouse’ cover, and possibly even a Best Of the first three albums on one disc, traveling in order through the three eras.
The future is very busy."
