Hallofmetal.com spoke to TO-MERA guitarist Tom MacLean about a number of topics recently. Here are a few excerpts from the chat:

Hallofmetal.com: Progressive rock and metal, avant-garde, jazz, technical metal, experimental music. How would do you define your own music to people never heard of To-Mera before?

MacLean: "I tend to think of our music as contemporary progressive metal that reflects all the interesting things that are happening in the genre of metal as a whole, whilst incorporating ideas inspired by jazz harmony, as well as early 20th century classical music. It is rhythmically and harmonically quite adventurous, yet for the most part is not so complex that you can’t sing and dance along with it. Melody and groove is a big part of our sound I think."

Hallofmetal.com: The UK was the cradle of metal in the beginning of the 80's. Apart from the classic bands, only few British metal bands seem to have some sort of relevance. What do you think about the current situation of the UK concerning the metal scene?

MacLean: "Hmmm. There are some incredibly talented and creative young British bands around at the moment, but I would say that a lot of them have more in common with the hardcore scene. There really aren’t too many progressive metal bands around over here, but the few that we do have are quite exceptional."
