Legendary ZZ TOP Bassist Dusty Hill - "There's A Lot Stories About Our Name"
June 12, 2008, 16 years ago
Legendary ZZ TOP bassist Dusty Hill spoke to the Clarionledger.com recently about a number of topics including their first-ever DVD, Live from Texas, due out via Eagle Vision on June 24th. Here are a few excerpts from the chat:
Q: You're putting out your first-ever DVD, Live from Texas, on June 24. What's that all about?
A: "It's been a long time coming. You know, it's one of those things where people asked and we've thought about doing it for a long time and finally the situation was right for it; and, as a matter of fact, we got to do it in Texas outside of Dallas, so it was very home-friendly and all that. It's a good performance with a few little tidbits off the stage, so I'm pretty excited about it."
Q: Is it true that you'll be working with producer Rick Rubin for your next studio album?
A: "Well, yeah, we're certainly talking. We've known him for awhile, and we're definitely getting in the studio and going to record here as soon as we can wrap up the tour. Pretty much that's the plan. The only reason I'm evasive at all is because unless I'm in there right now - you know what I mean? We are who we are and Rubin's who he is, which ought to be a great collaboration, really. That's also very exciting. If you look at his track record, he seems to get what you need to get out of who he's working with."
Q: There's been many rumors about what the name ZZ Top means, and one is that it's a tribute to Mississippi native bluesman B.B. King. Is that true?
A: "There's a lot stories about our name. I'll put it this way. I've never told my wife where it came from, I've never told my daughter. It's even getting a little fuzzy to me, it's been so long. So what I always say is whichever one of those stories you enjoy the most, well then that sounds good to me. There's many - the old blues guy Z.Z. Hill, B.B. King, Zig-Zag and Top rolling papers, whatever. There's a lot of stories."
