With its tales of church burnings, murders and occultism, Norway may be considered the birthplace of severe black metal, but it has nothing on Canada. There's a reason - other than prison - that genre-defining bands like Mayhem have never toured here: they can't hack it. Cold, bleak, desolate and unrelenting, Canada is tough ground, as Toronto's ECLIPSE ETERNAL can attest.

Flag-bearers for the Great White North's black metal contingent, this nearly decade-old act have forged on through innumerable obstacles, including member deaths, revolving lineups and the greatest battle: general dismissal by metal fans, simply because they're Canadian.

"Canadian black metal has a bad reputation internationally, almost like Canadian movies," says guitarist Lord Abaddon. "Once you hear something artistic is Canadian, people almost immediately form a negative opinion of it, which is sad.

"If you're not from Europe, people don't want to deal with you. Even Canadians are like that. But what's worse is when people here start accepting you because you're attaining some level of success overseas. They ignored you forever, but all of a sudden you're valid. That's just frustrating."
