September 17, 2008, 16 years ago
BW&BK; has received the following press release:
Death Magnetic, the ninth studio album from multi-platinum hard-rock band METALLICA, is the best selling album in Canada this week, debuting at No. 1 on the Nielsen SoundScan Top Current Albums chart, selling over 81,000 copies in just 3 days. Death Magnetic hit shelves in Canada on a Friday instead of the traditional release date of Tuesday in order to accommodate a simultaneous worldwide release date. Canadian sales of Death Magnetic were the biggest in the world per capita.
Death Magnetic is Metallica’s first studio album since 2003’s multi-platinum St. Anger, which also debuted at No. 1 in 30 countries, including Canada, and to date has sold nearly six million copies worldwide. Death Magnetic, produced by legendary producer Rick Rubin (RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, JOHNNY CASH, BEASTIE BOYS), was released worldwide on Friday, September 12th, and despite only being in stores for three days, debuted at No. 1 in Canada and the US, as well as in Argentina, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal and Sweden, with more No.1 rankings from other countries expected as the charts roll in. The album’s lead single, “The Day That Never Comes” has been a runaway hit at Canadian Rock Radio, which is especially impressive since it is almost eight minutes in length.
Formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, Metallica has become one of the most influential and commercially successful rock bands in history, having sold 100 million albums worldwide, including over 5 million in Canada alone. The band have toured relentlessly, playing to millions of fans the world over and have garnered numerous awards and accolades, including seven Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, and multiple MTV Video Music Awards.
Metallica will be launching their first proper tour of the United States and Canada in over four years, beginning on October 21st in Glendale, AZ, and will include three Canadian stops in December.
