hot flashes news opeth

New York Times correspondent Ben Ratliff has issued a review of OPETH's September 18th show at the Nokia Theater in New York City. An excerpt is available below:

"The remarkable Swedish group Opeth practices a kind of double consciousness. It’s a ’90s Scandinavian death-metal band, with scoured subtone screaming and double-bass-drum palpitations; then, on a level where fantasy becomes art, it’s also an early-’70s progressive folk-rock band, and the voice of its lead singer, Mikael Akerfeldt, suddenly enters the ripely melodic, mellow but firm, weary but courtly masculine mode that you might hear from a minstrel at your local Renaissance Faire.

Mr. Akerfeldt runs the show, and this was clear at the band’s concert on Thursday at the Nokia Theater. He is the principal composer, the only lyricist, the singer and the rhythm guitarist. He was the only one to speak between songs, too, and he carried the mildly irritating self-confidence of those who know they perform their tasks extremely well."
