CHRIS CORNELL - “Writing Solo Songs Has Always Been Whatever I Feel Like... There Was No Identity To Worry About”

Speaking with Greg Prato for Long Island Pulse, Chris Cornell discusses his new album, Higher Truth. An excerpt follows:

Q: What are some differences between creating songs for Soundgarden and a solo album?

A: “Soundgarden is something that you sort of write into. You imagine what this band is, and what it means, and that identity kind of changed over the years. And then up until this album, really, I think writing solo songs has always been whatever I feel like. There was no identity to worry about. In Higher Truth I clearly had a goal in terms of writing—all the songs needed to work in an acoustic context, stripped down entirely to just acoustic guitar and singing. And if they didn’t work that way, then they weren’t going to make it on the album.”

Cornell recently stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show to perform his new single "Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart”. Watch the clip below:

Cornell released his fifth studio album, Higher Truth, on September 18th via Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). The album track “Worried Moon” is streaming below. Fans can order the deluxe version of album here, which contains four bonus tracks.

Chris recently released the official music video for "Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart", the debut single from Higher Truth. The video envisioned by Cornell and directed by Jessie Hill features a cameo by acclaimed Hollywood actors Eric Roberts (Runaway Train, Heroes, The Expendables), W. Earl Brown (Deadwood), as well as Chris Cornell making his acting debut. It tells a love story in a quintessential Wild West setting with an unexpected ending. The video demonstrates Cornell's instinctive ability to incorporate fascinating stories into his music.

Produced by Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Neil Young), Higher Truth showcases Cornell's constant evolution as a master songwriter, lyricist and musical craftsman - telling human stories, which transcend musical genres.  Inspired by the stark arrangements of musicians like Nick Drake, Daniel Johnston and White Album-era Beatles, Cornell creates a musical universe unlike anything he has done before.
