Easy On The Eye publishing continue work on their upcoming Fire In The Sky book celebrating the 45th anniversary of Deep Purple’s legendary 1972 album, Machine Head.
An update from Easy On The Eye reads as follows:
“Forty five years ago this week, Deep Purple arrived in Montreux for what turned out to be a chaotic few days before they actually began recording at the Petite Palais Pavillon. Research and writing on Fire In The Sky, the new biography of Machine Head, has been continuing throughout the year with a lot of new information being uncovered, and a few old "facts" being laid to rest. Over 70 pages of often amazing photographs and memorabilia have already been gathered, and we are negotiating for more unpublished material as well. There is still work to do, including a couple of exclusive interviews, which we will discuss when they are in the bag as it were. As with the In Rock book, the work is being done by Simon Robinson and Stephen Clare, and is due for publication in Spring 2017 to mark the 45th anniversary of the album's release.
For now we are pleased to show exclusive visuals from the book, although as always pictures might be moved about before final publication. This will be a regular size softback, in the same size and format as the previous Easy On The Eye book about In Rock (mention of which reminds me that the publishers are also trying to schedule a second print edition of this title early in 2017 due to demand; it is fetching silly prices online, so resist.) There is a chance of a special expanded edition of the Machine Head book being issued. If it does happen, both editions will be launched at the same time.
There is now a plan to mark the recording of Machine Head properly in Montreux at last, with a town trail, plaques on certain buildings and maybe even an interpretive area near the Grand Hotel. The authorities there are looking into funding and the necessary permissions (the Grand Hotel is a listed building so they cannot just go sticking any old thing on there.) Again, more if it happens. Mindful of the way some of these book projects get delayed (I can't begin to describe the turmoil and delays the EU vote caused, as some of our books are printed in Europe and all financial planning went right out the window) we will not be taking any pre-orders until we are confident of a publication schedule.
As always, if anyone has any memorabilia, photographs or memories of Montreux in the '70s, please get in touch. Even little snippets help. We spoke to an elderly woman earlier this year who worked in a hairdresser's shop on the Grand Hotel street level at the time, and she never heard a note of what was happening upstairs; so at least we know the mattresses worked!”
