WJCU 88.7 FM, Auburn Records, The Exchange and Iron Ingo Stührenberg present the Eighth Annual Cleveland Metal Holiday Food Drive, set to take place Saturday, December 3rd at the Beachland Ballroom and Tavern in Cleveland, Ohio.
The billing is as follows: Chemikill, Destructor (pictured above), Ego, Hell And Back, Larry The Wolf (Manimals), Lotus Pedal, Lower 13, Olathia, Poobah, Terror (pictured below), Threefold Law, Wretch.
Also featured will be special guest appearances by Metallica tribute band The Four Horsemen, outlaw burlesque troupe The Red Hot Heathens, Playboy model Daniella Dior (pictured below) and a charity raffle with great prizes. Doors open at 4 PM. Show starts at 5 PM. Admission is free.
Fans attending the concert are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and/or cash donations to help those in need this holiday season. A donation will be made from the Cleveland metal community to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and Friends Of The Cleveland Kennel animal rescue organization.
“Our donation totals have increased every year”, says event organizer Bill Peters. “Last year we collected 4.5 tons of food and over $6,000 in cash. It’s a total team effort from all those involved. Heavy metal fans are the most generous when it comes to supporting good causes. We are making a positive difference for those less fortunate in our community. It feels good to give something back to help.”
“Friends of the Cleveland Kennel is so grateful for the annual Cleveland Metal Holiday Food Drive”, says Friends Of The Cleveland Kennel director Becca Britton. “Each year, we have come to rely on these donations to help us. Thank you for your continued support of our work, it means so much to us. You are truly making a difference for the animals in need by having this event each year. Thank you!”
“WJCU is once again very proud to help promote the annual Cleveland Metal Holiday Food Drive, now in its eighth remarkable year”, adds WJCU general manager Mark Krieger. “The terms ‘benefit performance’ or ‘food drive’ really fall short of describing the social phenom this event has become. An army of dedicated artists and volunteers come together in a way that feels like a huge family reunion, and the outcome just gets bigger every year in what’s becoming a great-hearted Cleveland tradition”.
This year’s lineup includes performances by Cleveland death thrashers Terror , a reunion of underground 80s metallers Chemikill (pictured above) for their first show in 25 years, Larry The Wolf (founder of horror-rock legends the Manimals) and pounding metal headbangers Destructor.
“We’ve returned to the scene unearthing classic hymns of metal in the vein of early Slayer and Nasty Savage”, says Terror vocalist/guitarist Brian Sekula . “We also have a new release coming out on Stormspell Records called Decades Of Terror. It's an anthology of all our demos remastered plus bonus stuff, cool photos, lyrics and bio packaged in a 12-page booklet with killer art by Yannak Borched from Canada. We’ll have it for sale at the show. I couldn't be more pleased with the results and for the first time in close to 30 years we are working on new material for a full length hopefully late next year. I look forward to the 3rd. We have a special set planned for the night.”
“I’ve been a long-time animal rights advocate so when Bill (Peters) asked if could play I agreed to do a very special, one-night, set”, says Larry The Wolf. “Guitarist Shaun Vanek from Midnight, drummer Mark Klein from Breaker and guitarist Mike Layton are in my band. We’ll be doing a set of Manimals classics, along with my new single “Countdown To Venus” that was just released last Friday. I’m looking forward to being a part of this very special night, to benefit the Friends Of The Cleveland Kennel and Greater Cleveland Food Bank.”
“We have quite a diverse musical line-up this year spanning five decades of Northeast Ohio hard rock and heavy metal”, says Peters. “Poobah, for example, released their debut album, Let Me In, all the way back in 1972. The album has become a highly sought after, collectible piece of heavy rock history over the years. It’s going to be fun seeing them share the stage with these younger bands!”
Iron Ingo Stührenberg is a former writer for the German underground heavy metal webzine Metal Rules. He has traveled to Cleveland from his home in Wiesmoor, Germany at his own expense, to host three of the previous food drive benefit concerts in 2009, 2010 and 2014. He will be returning again this year.
“It is time again to celebrate the music we love so much and helping out people in need but also our friends on four paws”, says Iron Ingo. “Especially in times like this it's so important to participate on humanity and understand the purpose of life is to contribute in some way to better up circumstances for everyone who´s not so fortunate as most of us are. The key for happiness can be to help others. It helps yourself to be happy and that is what makes the difference. If everybody is willing to do small steps in the right direction it will help to make this world a better place. Just give a little bit to help a lot! See you at the Beachland on the 3rd!”
