FAITH NO MORE Bassist BILLY GOULD Talks We Care A Lot Re-Issue, Possibility Of Follow-Up Album To Sol Invictus In Tangra Mega Rock Interview
August 19, 2016, 8 years ago
Faith No More bassist Billy Gould recently returned to visit Bulgaria's Tangra Mega Rock to discuss the band's re-release of their classic We Care A Lot album. The video of the interview is available below along with an excerpt from the transcript.
TMR: I'm sure that a lot of people are asking themselves and probably ask you a next album after Sol Invictus and when?
Gould: "I can completely understand why they would ask that question, it makes perfect sense. I really have no idea, I mean, really. I think that when we decide that we're gonna do something, we're going to announce it together. I don't think it would be fair for me to say anything."
TMR: Are there any songs that you wanted to be on the record, but you decided to pull them away?
Gould: "Yeah, we made more songs than we did. Definitely. I don't know, I mean, our relationship is very good so I don’t see why we wouldn't. But I just can't be the guy to tell you."
TMR: You are in Europe now to promote your next release which is not exactly a new album. Please tell, what it is exactly?
Gould: "Well, maybe to some people it is a new album - it's called We Care A Lot and it's the first album that Faith No More put out in 1985 and we're releasing it and we're doing it ourselves.
TMR: What is different from the original release?
Gould: "Well if not everybody knows we had a different singer. Jim Martin was playing guitar but he just joined the band we had a few guitar players before that and it was the first thing he did. It was originally a demo tape and we decided to go to a really nice studio and try to make it sound good. Maybe if it sounded good we get a recording deal out of it. And we recorded this thing and we got signed in a week…."
TMR: Really?
Gould: "Yeah, it worked and the funny thing also is that we weren't even going to re-release this record except I was cleaning my basement of my house and we found the master tapes. My wife made me clean the basement and we found them and it's like 'Oh my God...' We forgot that I that I had the master tapes there so we did a new mastering for it. It sounds better than the original, I think. So we're happy to put it out."
Faith No More’s landmark debut, We Care A Lot, which was initially released in 1985 and has been out of print for 20 years, sees an August 19th reissue via Bill Gould’s Koolarrow Records.
As part of the build up to the release), watch new, rare footage (audio and video by Chris Husband) of Faith No More performing “The Jungle” live from 1986 at The i-Beam in San Francisco:
The footage and track are included on the album reissue, and the track is also now available (as well as "We Care A Lot" and "As The Worm Turns') as instant downloads on the iTunes pre-orderl.
“This was an album that started as a demo, before any label had any interest in us,” explained Faith No More bass player Bill Gould. “There were a couple of reasons we decided to release this now: first of all, it’s been 20 years since it has been commercially available. Secondly, when cleaning out my basement, I discovered the original master reels, and we all thought that resurrecting this from the original tapes would be a great way to reintroduce We Care A Lot into the world. Lastly, this has been a band effort; we are releasing this in the same way as we recorded it, deciding everything amongst ourselves and getting our hands deep into the nuts and bolts… just like we used to.”

Following the Grammy nominated album Angel Dust, Faith No More returned in 1995 with King For A Day... Fool For A Lifetime. Recorded at Bearsville Studios near Woodstock, New York, it was the first without longtime guitarist Jim Martin, whose departure had an influence on the direction of the album. In the new liner notes, keyboardist Roddy Bottum writes: "As a result, we wrote and recorded some of our most radical, out there songs, like 'Cuckoo For Caca' and 'Ugly In The Morning', some of our mellowest like 'Take This Bottle', 'Caralho Voador' and then some of our most high-drama, like 'Just A Man'."
Among the eight bonus tracks are the b-sides "Spanish Eyes" and "Absolute Zero", as well as the band's cover of The Bee Gee's "I Started A Joke", which was originally released as a b-side in 1995, and then as a single in 1998.

Album Of The Year became the first Faith No More release to feature members of the current lineup: Mike Bordin (drums), Roddy Bottum (keyboards) Billy Gould (bass) Jon Hudson (guitar), and Mike Patton (vocals). Recorded mostly in Gould s home studio, the album produced three singles: "Ashes To Ashes", "Last Cup Of Sorrow" and "Stripsearch". In the liner notes, Bottum writes: "We were definitely referencing our musical roots as well, going back to darker tones visited in Angel Dust... in retrospect it feels really strong and an undeniably prolific chapter in what we ultimately set out to do."
Album Of The Year's eight bonus tracks also include live versions of the album track "Collision" and the Burt Bacharach and Hal David classic, "This Guy's In Love With You", plus rare mixes of "Last Cup Of Sorrow", "Pristina" and more.
