January 9, 2016, 8 years ago
Former Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Whitesnake drummer Cozy Powell was honoured by the Cirencester Civic Society in his hometown of Cotswold, England yesterday (January 8th). Queen guitarist Brian May and Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi unveiled a plaque (pictured below) in Cozy's honour on the outside wall of the Corn Hall.
Former Black Sabbath singer Tony Martin was in attendance at the unveiling and say the he’s reconnected with Iommi after 15 years!
“Well, what a great day,” he wrote on Facebook. “I attended the unveiling of Cozy Powell’s memorial plaque in his home town of Cirencester, along with Brian May, Neil Murray, and Tony Iommi .... And to my surprise was greeted by Tony Iommi VERY warmly. Its the first conversation of any length I have had with him in 15 years!!!! And it turns out we may well be working together soon!
Just want to thank Rossella Amadori for her efforts to create a Cozy Powell memorial. It resulted in a wonderful moment attended by possibly the best names in the business. It was a pleasure to have been a part of it. I was asked at the time to say a few words and I thought everything had already been said so I left it to the others to speak but thinking on it now I DO have a few words that may contribute to the sentiments. I come from a SLIGHTLY different angle to the other fine people that spoke. My connection started as a FAN and as a 17 year-old found Cozy Powell. When I heard his playing I remember thinking what the fuck had I just heard???? I listened again and again and was hooked. I got to work with Cozy obviously with Sabbath and they were also a band of my youth. They both came together wonderfully with the Headless Cross album and you cant imagine the head spinning feelings of being able to work with them. It truly is a pleasure to have been a part of the memorial. Well done Rossella and on behalf of all the fans of Cozy .... Thank you. Cozy's memory is worth remembering. He was a great guy, he didn’t suffer fools gladly and he really was one of the best.”
Martin’s last appearance on a Black Sabbath album was 1995’s Forbidden.
