GLENN HUGHES Talks Last Gig Ever With DEEP PURPLE In 1976 - "At The End Of The Show We All Had That Feeling That We'd Come To The End Of The Road"
September 16, 2017, 7 years ago
Metal Wani’s Daniel Jaramillo recently spoke with legendary ex-Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes. They discuss Glenn’s upcoming Deep Purple tribute show, why he likes to play in Australia and his impression of Australian audiences, the idea behind playing classic Deep Purple songs live, the impact Deep Purple’s songs have had on popular culture, decline in record sales and what it means for him personally to perform those songs 40 years later.
Glenn also talks about how he chose the band line-up to play a Deep Purple tribute show, on whether he was aware that his last show with Deep Purple at Liverpool Theater in 1976 would be his last ever gig with the band, the 'feeling of discontent' that this was the end of the road and on Deep Purple being inducted into the rock n roll hall of fame as well as whether those accolades mean much to him.
They also spoke about whether he listens to any contemporary rock bands, why there's no urge to listen to other bands anymore, lack of bands in the current scene who can replace the legends and his plans to release new music in the near future.
More footage has surfaced from Glenn Hughes’ performance at Hungary’s Fezen 2017 festival. In the clip below, Hughes performs the Deep Purple track “You Keep On Moving”, from the 1975 album, Come Taste The Band.
Previously posted footage of Glenn performing the Deep Purple classics “Getting Tighter” and “Might Just Take Your Life” can be seen below:
For the first time in 40 years, Glenn Hughes is set to perform full concerts of classic Deep Purple material. Shows are scheduled this September and October in Australia and New Zealand. A new TV commercial can be found below.
Hughes played his last concert with Deep Purple on March 15th, 1976, at Liverpool's Empire Theatre. On that night, the UK bassist and vocalist walked away from one of history's truly game-changing rock phenomena and never looked back… until now.
Witness one of rock's greatest singers front a mighty handpicked band performing some of Deep Purple's all-time greatest songs with epic rock concert production.
Says Hughes: “I’m incredibly excited to get out there and play tracks like “Burn”, “Mistreated”, “Stormbringer” and “Getting Tighter”, as well as some of those older songs that helped define the genre. With this band, I can assure you of a concert that’ll blow your mind."
Joining Hughes for the shows are Jeff Kollman (guitar), Lachy Doley (keyboards), and Pontus Engborg (drums).
With one of the heaviest repertoires known to rock, and sound and lighting production values befitting the legend, Glenn Hughes' Classic Deep Purple shows are destined to write a new page in rock history.
