JOE MATERA - "I Don't Play To Express Technical Prowess; I'd Bore Myself To Death If I Just Played Solos Non-Stop"
July 23, 2015, 9 years ago
Louder Than Words is the brand new album by Australian solo rock artist Joe Matera. His third studio full length outing, Louder Than Words, was released this week. He recently wrapped up a European tour in support of the record and spoke with BraveWords scribe shortly after the tour was completed. Following is an excerpt from the interview, due to be published soon, with Matera offering the lowdown on his music.
"Basically my music is rock, but if needed to be labelled, then I would call it AOR or melodic rock," says Matera. "My earlier releases were mostly instrumental, but not in the shredding vein a la Satriani, rather more in a song format and structure. My guitar playing is always about melody and the song. I don’t play for the sake of playing or to express technical prowess. I find nothing more boring than long winded guitar solos or guitar playing for sake of it. I’d bore myself to death if I just played solos non stop! I love songs and I love the melodic content my guitar can bring to the song. I play because of what I feel and the melodies I hear in my head."
"In recent times, my songs have become more vocal based, so my latest album is predominantly vocal based albeit for a couple instrumentals. My recorded output is all in a full band electric format. My studio band on my new album Louder Than Words comprises Americans James Strickler on bass and Ed Garza on drums. Both are brilliant outstanding musicians in their own right. James’ is probably better known as bass player for metal outfit Angellic Rage. James has been with me since I released my Slave To The Fingers instrumental EP in 2011. He is also an amazing studio engineer and in-demand mixing guy, who has mixed all my releases to date and as well as co-produced the new album with me."
