In late 1993, Satriani joined Deep Purple as a temporary replacement for departed guitarist Ritchie Blackmore during the band's Japanese tour. In the video clip below, he discusses the impact of Deep Purple and Machine Head.
“Machine Head crystallized what I thought was hard rock and heavy metal,” Satch says. “There was a lot of heavy rock going on a few years before that. A lot of the bands doing it probably didn't think it was gonna last that long. When that album came out, I was playing in a high school rock band covering Sabbath, The Stones. Hendrix and Cream and stuff like that. It meant a lot. We said ‘this record has done it right. There is something solid about it. There something cultured about it. It's gutsy, it's bluesy, it's soulful, but it's polished at the same time. Certainly from a guitar players point of view, being an American, it sounded kind of exotic in a way.”
