My Global Mind recently caught up with former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman to discuss his solo career, influences, and the possibility of him returning to the Megadeth fold. An excerpt is available below:

MGM: How do you view your musical legacy-is it something that you regard with pride?

Marty: "I am not finished yet! I look at it as pretty good so far but I have yet to do my best thing."

MGM: Any advice for any young guitarists starting out? Obviously there have been significant changes in the industry since you started?

Marty: "Yeah, making a living in music has never been easy. If you start off playing music with the hopes of making a living at it then you should just give up: because it is impossible. If you start off playing music because you love playing music then maybe you have a chance to make a living at it. This is a good answer and is really true. Even if you make a living at it there is so much bullshit that you have to deal with every single day that you could make a better living with less bullshit doing many other jobs. I have to say that you have to start because you love playing music and that’s what you want to do."

MGM: I believe that Megadeth are in the market for a new guitarist. Has that chapter finally closed for you? You earlier said that you prefer to move forward rather than go back.

Marty: "I don’t really have an answer for you, I know that people would want to know. Honestly I don’t have an answer. I have never said never to anything in my life, so who knows? I really don’t know."

Following a triumphant trek across the UK alongside Kreator, Arch Enemy and Shining, Marty Friedman presents his brand new music video for "Undertow", taken from his solo album Inferno.

The video features an unsullied look at Japanese culture, says Friedman (who currently resides in Tokyo): "'Undertow' gives you a look at the Japan not usually seen by the typical Japanese exports like crazy TV shows, ultra-cute singers and anime. It shows a day in the life of Japan as the Japanese see it, not the stereotypical Western 'Japanophile' view of it."

Regarding the video's concept, Friedman explains that, "the 'Undertow' video attempts to show that when you see a thing of beauty, there is often an undercurrent of true sadness and hardship behind the scenes which creates the motivation to do something extraordinary."
