MOTÖRHEAD Drummer MIKKEY DEE Discusses New Clean Your Clock Release - “LEMMY Was Giving 100% All The Way”
June 7, 2016, 8 years ago
On November 20th and 21st, 2015, at the Zenith in Munich, Germany, UDR Records made the decision to record the very last live shows ever recorded by Motörhead, prior to the death of leader Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister on December 28th, 2015 - four days after his 70th birthday - in Los Angeles from an extremely aggressive cancer. Titled Clean Your Clock, the live album was released on May 27th.
In a new interview with MetalPaths.com’s Karagiannidis Panagiotis, drummer Mikkey Dee discusses this important release, the last shows with Motörhead, and Lemmy. An excerpt follows:
Q: So, Clean Your Clock is the title of the live DVD; a live DVD of Motörhead’s shows in November 20th and 21st, 2015 in Munich, Germany. I guess you couldn’t imagine back then that this DVD would feature Motörhead’s last ever shows…
A: “Definitely no. We had tour dates already planned for 2016 and even considered to film more shows. We were able to document the shows in Munich. Lemmy was giving 100% all the way.”
Q: The press release of the DVD starts saying “Never was the spirit of Motörhead more alive than when they were on tour”. I guess there is no better person than you to explain what this sentence really means.
A: “There is just something about getting together on stage with the fans, lights, volume, and the smell of energy and the excitement of the fans that kept us going for these years. We felt always so supported.”
Q: The DVD features the shows in Munich however the last show took place in Berlin on December 11th. What are your memories from that show?
A: “Basically we were all looking forward to getting home before the Christmas holidays and Lemmy’s birthday party event. Everything was a bit in turmoil as Phil had to be hospitalized and we had to postpone the last shows and of course, Lemmy’s health; he was looking more fragile and tired than ever. We were all looking forward to take a rest and some time off.”
