MOTÖRHEAD Smashes Into Craft Beer Movement; Motörhead Imperial Pale Lager Available Next Week
October 30, 2015, 9 years ago
The world’s loudest band continue celebrating 40 years on the road by crafting a new beer, Motörhead Imperial Pale Lager.
Having crafted the gleeful punishment of eardrums world-wide, Motörhead, the worlds loudest band, are also moving into the craft beer movement. Like Motörhead’s music, craft-brewers don’t do half-measured weak-kneed bullshit, and so alongside Swedish brew master (and head banger) Patrick Holmqvist at Nils Oscar Brewery, the band have produced a skull-crushing, ground-breaking imperial lager. Proudly carrying a huge hop-infused character way beyond your everyday beer, Motörhead Imperial Pale Lager is more than a kick-ass craft beer, it is synergy.
Mikkey Dee, legendary drummer of Motörhead says: “We’ve released a few drinks now, and for every one, we want to push the limits further. With Motörhead Imperial Pale Lager, we pulled all the stops, and this is craft beer at it’s best. We love the approach of Patrick and his crew at Nils-Oscar, and we know our fans will love this great beer as much as we do.”
Patrick Holmqvist, master brewer at Nils Oscar Brewery in Nyköping says: “Motörhead are a huge part of my childhood, so needless to say I jumped at the opportunity to brew with this iconic band. From my first show at Saga in Copenhagen on April 3rd 1986 I instantly connected with the sound, the attitude and their complete refusal to compromise. I took all that with me to the brewery, and for me, the beer absolutely reflects those things.”
Patrick Holmqvist, finally: “I remember watching an interview with Lemmy on TV, and he was asked to describe his style of playing. “Turn it up very loud, and hit it very hard”. That’s exactly what we did with this beer.”
Motörhead Imperial Pale Lager is released at Systembolaget in Sweden on November 2nd and retails at 29,90 sek.
The “Imperial” indicates that it is an amplified version of the original beer style. Generously hopped with Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial and Simcoe hops, it pulls toward an American take of the lager-beer. While being a fruity lager with a huge hop character, it still has a high drinkability. Not only a huge lager, it also showcases the great brewing skills of Patrick Holmqvist and the Nils Oscar Brewery.
Nils Oscar Brewery was founded in 1996, and has since become Sweden’s leading craft brewery. In recent years, the brewery has - through collaborations with other breweries such as Adnams in the UK and Great Divide in Colorado, US among others - become a well-renowned brewery on the international beer-scene.
By now everyone knows that Motörhead walk their own path and do things their own way. To celebrate 40 years of eardrum crushing, Motörhead Whisky is now released in collaboration with beverage partner Brands For Fans and award-winning Swedish distillery Mackmyra.
The un-compromising attitude that characterizes the band’s music is also obvious in Motörhead Whisky: bourbon-influences up front, it’s an alert and vital - almost cocky - perfectly balanced whisky with nice caramel and typical vanilla notes from American oak. October 1st saw the release of Motörhead Whisky at Systembolaget in Sweden to start with, and the band have played an active role in both choosing casks and blends to put their name on the label.
With Motörhead Whisky the band have made two top releases in one blow since the new album Bad Magic was just released earlier this summer and topped the charts in several countries.
Lemmy Kilminster, Motörheads legendary front man, founder, gravel-voiced vocalist and bass player says: "Life is less painful with Motörhead Whisky. I may consider having a sip now and then."
Mikkey Dee, Motörhead-drummer: "We think it’s great fun to launch a whisky in collaboration with a Swedish, world-famous distillery, Mackmyra. The whisky is incredibly good, with full character and fully flavoured with a superb bourbon touch, as it’s been aged in new American oak casks. All of us in the band have been active in the production process and are very proud over the result, and are happy to now launch such a great, characteristic whisky, Motörhead-style."
Sari Wilholm at Brands For Fans adds: "Motörhead are legends, and it has been a tough job to find the right style and type of whisky for them to stand for. Mackmyra produces world-class whisky, and the rich bourbon flavour in Motörhead Whisky showcases the amazing blending talents of Angela D’Orazio. The band has been trying casks and blends and have found a smooth whisky with a tough attitude to release. We are incredibly proud to be a part of this release." Motörhead Whisky suits any occasion where you’d otherwise have chosen a bourbon, as well as times where a classic scotch malt whisky would have been your first option.
Batch one of Motörhead whisky is a limited edition Swedish Single Malt Whisky with an oaky and slightly fruity character, characterized by ageing five years in new American oak barrels, where parts of the whiskey has got a final touch from oloroso oak barrels the last six months. Alcohol strength is 40% and the whisky is cool filtered, so no cloudiness should occur in the bottle or the glass, if the whisky is served at a lower temperature. In summary this becomes an enjoyable, easy to drink and easy oaky and spicy Swedish Single Malt Whisky.
Angela D'Orazio, Master Blender / CNO, Chief Nose Officer explains: "These wonderful oak barrels! I often come across fine barrels of whisky down in the mine, and here we have a bunch of great new American oak barrels that have matured a full five years. We talked about making a Swedish Malt Whisky with taste influences from Bourbon to the guys, - and there it was only waiting for us. For a little touch of something more, we added a small portion of whisky for six months ending on Oloroso oak barrels."
