PHIL ANSELMO On Being Branded A Racist By His Peers And The Media - "That's A Heavy Duty Implication When You Don't Know Jack Shit About Me"
December 16, 2016, 7 years ago
At the end of the performance of “Walk” at Dimebash 2016, which took place on January 22nd at Lucky Strike Live in Hollywood, CA, Phil Anselmo ended the night with a Nazi salute, then screamed “white power” to the crowd (video below). Uploader Chris R posted: “I originally cut this from my first post of “Walk”, but I feel people deserve to see this! A very sad moment and to me ruined the night! This is not what Pantera is about!!! Absolutely uncalled for and I can see why Vinny Paul wants nothing to do with this man. Phil Anselmo you are a racist prick!!”
In a new interview with Eddie Trunk on Sirius XM Volume (found here), Anselmo commented on th eincident and being branded a racist by fans, the media, Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn, and Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian. An excerpt from the conversation is below:
Anselmo: "These so-called peers who gave me backlash need to take a good, cold stare in the mirror themselves. And anyone else who throws that word 'racism' or 'racist' around so freely, they need to understand the implications of said word. That's a heavy-duty implication when you don't know jack shit about me except for what you've seen on what? In live performances, music videos, interviews, whatever. And taken out of this whole thing is my dark sense of humor, which at the time, I was half angry / half joking, because, funny enough, just before the gig started, Dug Pinnick from King's X, a gay black man, came to say hello to me. I kissed him on the lips because I'm comfortable as hell with my sexuality, and I don't care what people think about me sexually. And then he said, 'Man, you taste good,' and it was the white wine. I said, 'It must be that white power...' (laughs). Yes, so that was a joke there. And then some of my musical peers — your words — took that, and, by the way, the main culprit wasn't even privy to the room that I was in."
