Producer BOB ROCK On METALLICA - "I Think They’ve Got A Landmark Record In Them, And It’s Probably Brewing Right Now"

Guesting on the Eddie Trunk Podcast (found below), producer Bob Rock offered his thoughts on Metallica's forthcoming tenth album, even though he doesn't believe he'll be working with the band again:

"I don't see it happening. I think they've got to keep moving forward. With Death Magnetic they went back to their roots, which was great. I get where they went and they had to go there. I think they’ve got a landmark record in them, and it’s probably brewing right now."

Rock produced Metallica's classic Black album from 1991, Load, Reload, S&M; and St. Anger.

Rock Cellar Magazine recently caught up with Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo for an in-depth interview on his Jaco Pastorius film, Mass Menta, and Metallica. An excerpt is available below:

Rock Cellar Magazine: Which of Metallica’s older songs are the most fun for you to play live?

Robert Trujillo: "It really depends, it’s kind of a mood thing. I always enjoy playing 'The Call Of Ktulu' and 'Orion'. They’re both instrumentals, but…Cliff Burton’s presence is always felt in my mind when we play those songs. Regardless of it being an instrumental it’s a special homage to Cliff. A song like 'Disposable Heroes', whenever that’s in the set…I dig that groove. I love 'Fight Fire With Fire', that’s one of my favorite up-tempo songs to play."

Rock Cellar Magazine: What can you tell us about the new music you’re working on? How’s it sounding so far?

Robert Trujillo: "We’re just blueprinting everything right now. There are a lot of ideas, a lot of song bodies, you gotta go through the process. For me personally I’m really excited about what we’ve been able to jam out. I don’t like to make predictions, but I’d like to think – at least for me – that I’m really happy with what’s happening instrumentally. So let’s see how that journey continues. Writing a Metallica song is a journey and a process, and it takes time. But that’s what’s special about it. Metallica likes to nurture a song, nurture an arrangement."
