RUSH Frontman GEDDY LEE Discusses The Importance Of Music Education - “Music Was The First Thing I Found That I Was Good At Picking Up And Expressing Myself With”

Rush frontman Geddy Lee says music saved him in many respects as a youngster dealing with teenage angst and the death of his father.
"It was one of the first things I found that I was really good at doing," recalls the vocalist, bassist and keyboardist for CBC News. "I was kind of a medium kid in every other aspect.
"I was kind of medium at school, nothing grabbed me in terms of education besides maybe English and history... and I liked the graphic arts and things like that. But music was the first thing I found that I was good at picking up and expressing myself with."
Some people are simply born to be in the arts but it takes a good teacher to recognize, encourage and foster that in an engaging way, says Lee. He and fellow Rush members Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart hope to inspire such educators as the sole sponsors of the 2016 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award.
This year's recipient is Don Bosse, a music teacher at Fredericton High School in the New Brunswick capital. He gets $10,000 plus a contribution to his school's music program and VIP treatment throughout JUNO Week, which kicks off March 28th.

In a racent interview with Rolling Stone, Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson says that drummer Neil Peart “didn’t even want to do” R40, Rush’s 2015 tour that celebrated 40 years of Rush that ran from May 8th to August 1st.
"We had such a great time on the tour," Lifeson tells Rolling Stone. "And it was really nice to go through all the material in reverse chronology, and I think our fans really enjoyed it. I think that no matter how long it would have been, it would have been too short. Neil was prepared to commit to 30 dates and he told us that right from the very beginning. He didn't even want to do the tour, to be honest with you. It's been increasingly difficult for him, but he committed to the tour and we got through it. As far as he was concerned, that was the end of touring."
Rush have released the following video, showcasing their classic track “Tom Sawyer” through the years of 2003-2015 from Rush In Rio, R30, Snakes & Arrows Live, Time Machine 2011: Live in Cleveland, Clockwork Angels Tour, and R40 Live.
