SLAYER Frontman TOM ARAYA On Making Repentless Without JEFF HANNEMAN - "People Expect Us To Fail"

Billboard recently spoke with Slayer frontman Tom Araya about the band's new album, Repentless, which is out nmow worldwide. An excerpt from the interview is available below. The story originally appears in the September 19th issue of Billboard.

Q: How was it recording without Jeff Hanneman for Repentless?

Araya: "The one weird thing was [not having] his presence and opinions. Me and Jeff wrote all the music that has ever been in a Slayer song. I know how to write Slayer music, but to write an entire record -- aside from a song ('Piano Wire') of his that we used -- that’s a daunting thing to take on. I think we nailed it."

Q: Do you think that expectations are lower because the lineup is different?

Araya: "People expect us to fail. I went about writing this like every record: I don’t say I want to blow people away; I go about making the next album its own entity and as good as I can. People will say it sucks without hearing it. They’re behind a computer, 20 feet tall and invincible."

Slayer’s first music video from Repentless, the title track, makes it’s global premiere today. The video was shot late last month at the Sybil Brand Institute in East Los Angeles and is a grizzly depiction of what the Kerry King-created word means: "to feel no regret or remorse."

Slayer performed the song in the prison yard while a riot broke out, blood flowed in abundance, and inmates and prison guards were slaughtered. Directed by BJ McDonnell and produced by Felissa Rose, the video features cameos by actors who have been part of some of the most iconic horror films ever made: Danny Trejo (Machete, From Dusk Till Dawn), Tony Moran (Halloween's Michael Myers, American Poltergeist), Derek Mears (Predators, Friday the 13th), Tyler Mane (Halloween), Jason Trost (Hatchet III), Sean Whalen (Men In Black, Halloween II), and Vernon Wells (Mad Max 2, Commando, Weird Science).
