Legendary Toronto live music venue, The El Mocambo, was supposed to close its doors for good last night, Thursday, November 6th, but a new owner has reportedly put down a deposit on the legendary music venue.
According to The Toronto Sun, Michael Wekerle, of CBC’s hit show Dragons’ Den, has stepped in to buy the El Mocambo. The boisterous 50-year-old — called the rock star of Canadian finance — joked and laughed with reporters at the iconic venue Thursday night, where he was scheduled to take the stage later with his guitar.
“I had to buy the place to play,” he chuckled.
Wekerle says he grew up wanting to be a rock star like any other Canadian kid. Now he’s got his own rock club. And he says he doesn’t plan on changing much about the famed music venue on Spadina Ave., just south of College St., fondly nicknamed the El Mo.
“I’m going to keep as much of its original form as I possibly can,” Wekerle said.
The tavern has hosted the likes of The Rolling Stones, U2 and Queens of the Stone Age over the years. Read more and watch a video report at this location.
