AEROSMITH - Rocks Donington 2014

Much more than just another live DVD or Blu-ray, Aerosmith Rocks Donington is a concert film that enjoyed a successful nationwide theatrical run, prior to being made available as home entertainment. At 105 minutes in length, it showcases the Bad Boys from Boston headlining the prestigious Download Festival in England on June 15, 2014. This must-see spectacle begins with a pre-show peek into the individual band members’ dressing rooms, after which Aerosmith hit the enormous outdoor stage, beginning with a thunderous version of “Train Kept A Rollin’”. An unbelievable audience sing-along erupts during power ballad “Cryin’”, with the band enjoying themselves just as much as the crowd. Highly energetic frontman Steven Tyler’s delivery is beyond passionate; he’s playful yet simultaneously commanding with both body and voice in terrific shape – a true rock star! Guitarist Joe Perry sings lead vocals on “Freedom Fighter”, a track from the 2012 album Music From Another Dimension! Definitely the least known number of this massive 20-song set, as such the lyrics are projected on the giant screen above drummer Joey Kramer – smart move. Then it’s back to form with “Same Old Song And Dance”.

Between Perry, his six-stringed cohort Brad Whitford, and bassist Tom Hamilton, you lose count of how many different guitars Aerosmith brings on the road with them; truly a remarkable arsenal. Watching Joe Perry and Brad Whitford rock out, it’s obvious the influence they had on original Guns N’ Roses guitarists Slash and Izzy Stradlin. Expertly filmed – and without any solos (thankfully) – the set list is nicely varied from Aerosmith’s previous DVD, Rock For The Rising Sun, which came out in 2013. The finale features Tyler seated at a grand piano - which Joe Perry eventually climbs on top of - at the very end of the catwalk for “Dream On”; in a word, impressive. And just when you think it’s all over, Tyler elicits an ear-shattering “Fuck Curfew” chant from the still-excited crowd so they can play one more, one of their best, “Mama Kin”. And included in the packaging, is the complete audio of the concert split across two CDs.
