ANVIL - This Is Thirteen

It's no secret that once legendary Canuck metalheads Anvil have seen better times. Bands of that ilk are quite lucky the retro era of heavy metal is upon us and many are taking advantage of the touring benefits. Fanbases seem to be split into the old faithful who remember yesteryear quite fondly and the young upstarts that are finding out about such revered albums as Metal On Metal and the glorious Forged In Fire. There's been a behind-the-scenes head-butt going on between BW&BK; and Anvil since, well, since they've been putting out sub-par, power-less metal. Perhaps when Lips started chasing around puppies in a Toronto park for the video 'Bad Dog', the 'scenery' started to change for Anvil. And when they tried to get back on the studio track the engine fell off the rails. This Is Thirteen sees the band reunite with legendary Judas Priest/Thin Lizzy knob-twiddler Chris Tsangarides, the man also responsible for the boards behind Anvil's aforementioned peak albums. A producer can only do so much, right? But Anvil have come to the dinner table hungry, more ravaging than in a decade of forgotten molten memories. Lead-off title track sees the band set up fist-pounding festivities quite fittingly, Lips' easily recognizable swath echoing madly. 'Bombs Away' has that 'Winged Assassins' feel to it, while 'Burning Bridges' is one of many examples of crisp, clean production that Tsangarides still possesses. 'Axe To Grind' and 'Game Over' contain that good ol' backbone, Robb Reiner still pounding metal as feverishly as ever. But oddly enough, the punky edge of 'Flying Blind' is tops on the record, Lips' soaring like a man half his age. Classic return to form? Pretty damn close. The lads should be proud of this, their 13th effort (and the fitting acronym - T.I.T.). You're asking, 'Where can I get this CD?' Right now the band appear to be label-less, and they are selling it at their website, www.Anvilmetal.tk. Be quick, they only printed 1,000 copies.
