CANNABIS CORPSE - From Wisdom To Baked

So, we're now four albums in to what started out as something we all chuckled and rolled our eyes at, but this weed-obsessed death metal band is now laying down the goods as well as the bands they set out to pay homage to. So, getting past the hilarious song titles that tip the hat to both bud and death metal heroes ('Individual Pot Patterns', 'Considered Dank', personal fave 'THC Crystal Mountain') you get to the heart of the matter, which is old-school US death metal done up right. There are no frills, no technicality that isn't needed, and just enough caveman stomp und grind to get ya moshin' all the way to the swamps of Florida, with a quick pit stop along the way to buy more herb, of course. So, end result is a skilled death metal album that also isn't afraid to have some fun with it all, which makes for a pretty good combination. They've got some of the subtleties of the sound down--quick moments of bass pushed up in the mix, an overall feeling of low-end-heavy oppressiveness in the production--which just proves that these guys have heart in all the right places (a guest spot from Chris Barnes helps). Four full-lengths in, and I'm finally convinced that this is no joke.
