CANNIBAL CORPSE - Kill

(Metal Blade)
Full-length number ten from the legendary death metallers and what’s there left to say? Reviews of this band become pretty monotonous, number ratings arbitrary, because goddamn… you know what yer gonna get. Having said that, it’s an interesting phenomenon that I loved these guys as a teenager, and then didn’t care for a good number of years, and now I find myself enjoying them more again. With 17 years of playing behind them, these Floridians know what they’re doing, and when it comes to bottom-end, guttural death metal with no bells or freakin’ whistles, they do it perfectly. It’s still one-dimensional as hell, sure, but with a couple shorter blasts o’ death in here, the band shows they still have a lot of life (death?) in them. The replacement of long-standing guitarist Jack Owen with returning member Rob Barrett hasn’t really made a difference, although I’m sure some Corpseheads will be able to dispute that. So, it’s Cannibal Corpse, it’s equal parts impressive, sturdy, predictable, boring, raging and forgettable. But for some reason, right now I don’t want to imagine the metal world without them.
