EXMORTUS - Ride Forth

Now, I know I'm not the only one who can't remember this band's name and get them mixed up with some Swedish death metal band with a similar name, so, just to clear the air, this is the hysterical, video game-y LA-based shred/speed metal one, who play a form of trad-gone-nuts that sounds like it was made by computers. And, man, does that vibe ever get draining fast enough, the barely-human production sound just too perfect for me, the band failing to make any sort of emotional impact on the listener whatsoever, although they do shred fast and hard on the guitars. It's all about the six string, as the vocals are just kinda there, the drummer is solid but not spectacular (and destroyed by the production), the whole sound definitely fun and fast and furious, but also devoid of any attempt to connect with the listener in any way beyond “listen to this fast riff!”

And 44 minutes of that just leaves me feeling pretty empty, which is why I'm thankful for tunes like the slower “For The Horde”, but just imagine the impact if every drum hit wasn't identical to the last, if there was some cracks in the armour here, if the band WASN'T inhumanly tight? Remember the first Brutal Truth album, how the drummer would get off time sometimes trying to keep up to the rest of the band, and how exciting it was? Give me some of that to help me connect to this, because I just can't be moved by a machine, or by humans trying their hardest to end up sounding like machines.
