GONE IN APRIL - We Are But Human

Where you’re going to stand on this one really depends on your tolerance for operatic female vocals in metal. Look, I don’t have one single frilly shirt in my closet, but I do have some THE GATHERING promo CDs collecting dust somewhere after receiving maybe four listens back in 2002, so I’m borderline target market for GONE IN APRIL, a new band featuring ex-QUO VADIS folk. The memorable tunes that make up We Are But Human are gonna have fans of symphonic/goth metal going crazy, rife as they are with excellent riffs, great playing, soaring vocals, and spectacular drumming. And I generally can’t stand it when some woman is doing light opera singing over metal, but… well, I can’t stand it here either, but that’s me; I can put that aside and see that fans of the genre are, like I said, going to go crazy over this, as it’s top-notch stuff, delivered with quality. I love the simple, almost punk-ish moments that come in to mix things up and take away from some of the drama that always bogs this kind of stuff down. Too bad about the insanely long playing time, but, again… it comes with the genre, and too much of this stuff ain’t gonna be a bad thing to folks who are living the dream.
