GRAHAM BONNET BAND - Escape From Alcatrazz: Alive In Japan

Sort of an odd title, given the former Rainbow/MSG singer's past, as his outfit Alcatrazz, first with Yngwie Malmsteen, then Steve Vai, was something of a solace from the aforementioned (he being "in charge"), yet here he "escapes" from that band's repertoire, in favor of Rainbow standards from his lone recording with Mr. Blackmore, i.e. Down To Earth. In fact, four of the six inclusions are from said album. The other pair are actually Alcatrazz cuts (despite this CD's title). The Bonnet fronted Rainbow was my first concert experience, in '79, opening for Blue Oyster Cult. Weird this even got released, as the performances are a bit sketchy. Then again, individual tracks were posted on the band's Facebook page.

Bonnet is backed by a cooing female singer and at times, it's evident why, as he stumbles, vocally, especially noticeable on slower moments, like “Love's No Friend”, where he interjects a profanity laced ad lib, then says how much he loves his new band. One has to wonder if the old alcohol demons are still relevant, particularly when he admits to forgetting the words to “Since Uou've Been Gone”. Later he voices concern about hitting the high note on “Suffer Me”. The vocals on “Night Games” are hideously out of tune, everyone seemingly singing a different version. Finishing strong, the up-tempo “Lost In Hollywood” hides many of the defects. Would make me (a fan) think twice about seeing him in concert, which is not a good thing. Certainly not the vibe a live recording is supposed to foster in the listener.
