JAG PANZER - Thane To The Throne

Someone passed alliteration in high school English! The musical adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth is sure to raise a few knuckledraggers eyebrows, but if one is doing a concept record, make sure the story is infallible. Seventeen parts, ranging from 21 seconds to the eight minute, 'Tragedy Of Macbeth' finale, explore the demise of the 'invincible' king. A rudimentary understanding of the play makes the overall presentation more palatable. Musically, most tracks stay in the mid-tempo range, with plenty of space for Mark Briody and especially Chris Broderick go off on exploratory guitar passages. Medieval inspired intermezzos, violins and a classical string quartet performed 'Fugue In D Minor,' re-christened 'The Prophecies,' give a regal, historically accurate touch. The Tyrant proves to be in fine vocal form, as the storming 'King At A Price' sits nicely against the ragers he sang as a kid, in Jag Panzer's initial go-round. 'Three Of Voices Of Fate,' which utilizes backing female vocals to characterize the witches (fates), has a fist thrusting, beerhall anthem feel. Needless to say, when Lady Macbeth commits her murder and freaks from the blood on her hands, 'Insanity's Mind,' the pace quickens, leaving plenty of fretboard sawdust in its wake. As the album and story build towards the climax, the music intensifies, although 'The Downward Fall' is simply an acoustic guitar instrumental. The finale provides the aural equivalent of a summary, a re-cap of the entire story.
