METALLICA - Some Kind Of Monster

Beginning with Jason Newsted’s departure from the band, chronicling the writing and recording of the St. Anger album, and culminating with Metallica ’s triumphant return to the stage with new bassist Robert Trujillo, what would appear to be a straightforward trip from A to B is actually a complex, multi-faceted journey from A to Z. Some Kind Of Monster takes you behind the scenes like you’ve never seen before. As the band realizes their relationships are at an all-time low, and the risk of Metallica permanently falling apart becomes very real, management suggests they try group therapy. At the cost of $40,000 a month, therapist Phil Towle is brought in to help the band. The camera crew is there every step of the way capturing intimate round table discussions during which very private and personal feelings are revealed. Tensions run high as vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich continually butt heads. Unexpectedly, Hetfield admits himself to rehab for alcoholism, casting even more doubt upon the future of Metallica. During this time, Lars takes on Napster and tries to make peace with previous Metallica guitarist, Dave Mustaine. After James completes rehab and spends some much needed time with his family, he finally returns to the band. A new work schedule is implemented, allowing the St. Anger sessions to resume. Hetfield attempts to relinquish control as for the first time, Lars and guitarist Kirk Hammett contribute to the lyric writing process. Despite a few bumps in the road, their newfound collaborative creativity sees Metallica return to the cohesive unit fans always assumed they were. Some Kind Of Monster is not a concert film, rather an eye-opening documentary into the tumultuous world of Metallica. Equally revealing and astonishing, this remarkable film exceeds all expectations.
