MONSTROSITY - Rise To Power

With only one original member left, drummer Lee Harrison, Monstrosity continue to shuffle their deck. Vocalist Sam Molina has switched to guitar while his predecessor, Jason Avery returns to growl full-time for the veteran Floridian death metal group. Uninspired cover art aside, album number five features 11 self-produced songs that pound away relentlessly. 'The Fall Of Eden' serves a nice departure from the fast-paced brutality showcased on the rest of the disc. Acoustic flamenco guitar gives way to great electric crescendo picking in a pulchritudinous two minute instrumental. The demonic devastation returns to rip your soul apart on 'Chemical Reaction'. Although lyrical originality is lacking somewhat: 'Awaiting Armageddon' and 'Abysmal Gods' are tired topics that take away from the musical talent so obviously needed to shred in such ferocious fashion. The flurry of notes and bombardment of drumbeats are precariously near to all sounding the same. Minor distinctions are present but the all-encompassing noise resulting from an entire start to finish listen threatens to reduce the appreciation that comes after hearing only a cut or two. Reputation cemented as rulers of the underground, it's doubtful if this auditory aggression will ever ascend to the next plateau. Unfortunately, Monstrosity is still best known as the band that spawned current Cannibal Corpse vocalist, George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher - a tag that is proving impossible to shake.
