ORDEN OGAN - Ravenhead

One of the stars of the 2014 ProgPower festival, Germany's costumed power metallers also sport a definite stylistic similarity to countrymen Blind Guardian, complete with multi-voice choirs: big, bold, slightly symphonic sound. None moreso that the storming title track, which opens the disc (following a short, melodic intro, that's sure to kick off live shows, this concert circuit). Piano and big Van Canto style chorus opens “F.E.V.E.R”, then, with the flick of a switch, they launch into the fast/aggressive clickety clack rhythm that German apparently can conjure in their sleep (drunken stupor). A synth laced “The Lake” adopts a more modern/staccato tone, while the quirky, folk begun, but otherwise bombastic “Evil Lies In Every Man” is the disc's second best cut. Middle Ages instrumentation and that omnipresent choir reappear on “A Reason To Give”, but follow-up “Deaf Among The Blind” tends towards the opposite spectrum, speedy aggro and the undercurrent of mechanization.

The disc ends much as it began, with a short instrumental (“In Grief And Chains”) preceding actual song, although the melancholy “Too Soon” finale is nowhere near the power lead track. Guests include Joackim Cans (HammerFall) on “Sorrow In Your Tale” and Grave Digger mainstay Chris Boltendahl on “Here At The End Of The World”. Special edition digi includes a live DVD (Summer Breeze festival 2013) and a pair of bonus tracks: 8-bit rendition of the aforementioned “F.E.V.E.R.” and a folk version of “The Things We Believe In”, off their To The End CD.
